Bite-Sized Morsels of Biology that are Good and Good For You
Prokaryotic Cells
Prokaryotes were the first cells to evolve and they remain very simple and small. Bacteria and Archaea still have some organelles, but none are surrounded by internal membranes. For example, bacteria have DNA, but it is not in a nucleus, it is just located in what is called the "nucleoid" region of the cell.
Prokaryotic Organelles
Prokaryotes still have many of the enzymes and molecules that eukaryotes have, but they are mostly free in the cytoplasm, not isolated inside of internal membranes.
-
Pili - external appendages that can connect to a surface and exchange genetic information
-
Capsule - sticky substance outside the cell wall
-
Cell wall - helps the cell keep its shape
-
Cell membrane - controls what goes in and out of the cell
-
Ribosomes - make proteins with instructions from DNA (1 circular chromosome or plasmids)
-
Plasmids - not technically organelles, but small circular pieces of DNA that hold extra genes can be exchanged
