Cell Structures

Cells are the smallest units that are considered to be alive.  Part of being alive is having specialized structures that do specific things.  Cell parts are called organelles.

All living things have one of two basic cell types:

  • Prokaryotic Cells - unicellular organisms with no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles

  • Eukaryotic Cells - cells that do have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles

Bacteria and Archaea don't have membrane bound organelles, but they do have some specific structures.

Protists are mostly single-celled eukaryotes.  Plants, animals and fungi are all multicellular organisms with eukaryotic cells.
