Energy from Carbohydrates

Carbs As Energy.png

Glucose

Glucose is not the only monosaccharide, but it gets the most attention.

  • Glucose is broken down to release energy for respiration

  • In Aerobic Respiration, one molecule of glucose will net 36-38 ATP molecules

Polysaccharides

Polysaccharides are mostly just chains of glucose linked together

  • Starch is made in plants

  • Glycogen is made in animals

Enzymes in the liver can convert glucose and glycogen back and forth

  • When blood sugar is high, glucose is removed and linked to make glycogen

  • When blood sugar is low, glucose is broken off and released into the blood
